January 2008 Newsletter

Minutes of January 2008;

The meeting was called to order at approximately 6:00 pm at the range by new club president, Robert Williams. Present at the meeting were Alex Vervilos, Mike McCalister, Shaun Ayers, Mike Beddow, Robert Williams, Joe Campisi, Dave Haverstock, Robert Tabarez, Randy Gastineau, Mark Rubio, Bill Hornof Sr, Bill Hornof Jr, and Jim Wohlgemuth.

Old Business;

Please send any information, news or pictures that you would like to have added to our website to Shaun Ayers ( sayers@ucdavis.edu ). The website can be accessed at http://yolobowmen.com/, go and check out the hunting photos already uploaded, and read about the history of the club. Memberships are due beginning January 1, 2008. Please renew as soon as possible. Also remember that membership forms can be downloaded from the website for prospective new members. Randy G. brought up the issue of getting Yolo Bowmen business cards made. Including the web address, a contact phone number and a map. Seems like a great idea. Bill Jr. started a discussion of the club doing a better job providing refreshments and food during work parties, meetings, etc. There seemed to be a general consensus that as long as drinking didn’t get out of hand, it would be a nice show of appreciation to participating members. Mark said the results of the Big Buck contest would be available at the February meeting.

Range Report;

Randy reported that the bales are in pretty good shape, although the short range targets should be checked prior to the Oasis shoot. We need to burn some of the accumulated brush, including the pile near the 48yd target on the north side. Note: the large January storm hit after the meeting. Huge tree branches and a lot of debris are scattered throughout the range, bales have blown over, covers, and targets got blown off. It will take a lot work to clean up the mess. Please show up for work parties, we need the help. Individual efforts at cleanup are greatly appreciated. Randy also started the discussion of how best to reduce mowing damage to the range markers. Options included lowering the markers, building up a burm around the markers, and/or move the markers to the sides of the shooting lane.
Remember: NO SMOKING ON THE RANGE

New Business:

Mark started the discussion with the Oasis shoot, and any organizational details that need to be addressed. Jim W. who did a great job registering people last year needs some help, at least one more person. Robert T. requested a liability waiver for the shoot. Randy and Bill Jr. discussed the issue of alcohol use during the shoot, and the liability concerns for the club. It was decided that a prohibition on alcohol use statement on the registration form was probably enough for guest shooters. Members working at the shoot are asked to not drink alcohol during the shoot. It was decided that 3D target repair would be done once a week on Wednesday evenings 6-8pm until the job is complete. We need new locks for the pay cans, a combination style seems to be the best choice. The damaged pay can on the practice range still needs to be fixed. We also discussed moving the pay can on the 48yd first target on the North side from it’s current position to a spot near the shooting stakes. Hopefully the new position will be harder for guests to ignore. We also discussed the possibility of pursuing a low interest loan from CBH to construct the indoor range. Work also needs begin on moving the practice range from it’s current location to it’s future home amid the South end range. The Yolo Bowmen would like to thank Jon Adams again for all the great work he did designing and bringing our website online. We discussed a show of appreciation from the group. As most of you know Mike Beddow got a great job offer in Arizona and has now moved. Mike put a great deal of time and effort into the club while going to school at UCD. He’s a great guy to be around and one hell of a shooter. Thanks a lot Mike and good luck with everything.

Nor-Cal Report:

Financial Report:

Robert reported on club finances. A decision was made to open another CD with money in savings to maximize interest return.

Equipment Report:

The bale smasher needs to be repaired (a part welded?), it was recommended that Chad try to get this done, thanks Chad.

A Brief Introduction

The Yolo Bowmen Archey Range was founded in 1958 with the aim to promote the sport of archery and bowhunting. The range is located at Grasslands Regional Park in Davis, California. Though the range is open to the public for a small fee ($5), formal membership is affordable and highly encouraged. The range consists of two 14 target fieldcourses and an excellent practice range.
